Doing More With Less Means More Than Working Harder

The one wake up call we should have all received over the last two years is that doing more with less will separate the winners from the losers. Working harder will provide some benefit in the short term, however it can’t be considered as “the” solution. Improving efficiency is the only means of long term survival in the current environment; there is no other way.

Hearing “improving efficiency” brings a chill to many because the very first assumption is that we are already doing the best we can. Of course you are, and who wouldn’t be? The clincher in improving efficiency is finding what you don’t know. A quote I came across years ago by an unknown author captures this concept beautifully “Those that know, know they know; those that don’t know, don’t know they don’t know”.

Measuring Efficiency

Finding what you don’t know can’t happen by osmosis or assumption, there must be dialogue with those in the trenches doing the daily work. Call it a hunt for the unknown. Ask people what would help then do their jobs better, what one change to information they receive or capabilities they have that would make them more productive. Talk less and listen more, there is gold in what they have to say. The time for judgment of inputs is later, not while your listening. Your only task is to make sure you fully understand the reasons for their comments.

After discovering what is not known the next step is to take action on what you have learned. Consider that your business exists to create profitable revenue, therefore prioritize activities for improving efficiency with that fact in mind. Everyone should be adding value to the ability of creating profitable revenue. A tapeout, simulation, verification or characterization is adding value, only if the product sells! Use good detective skills; talk to people and prioritize improvements on making money as an excellent long-term strategy for doing more with less.
